Long before Los Angeles became defined by freeways and car culture, Village Green reimagined what a neighborhood could be.

Originally known as Baldwin Hills Village, the 68-acre community was conceived in the late 1930s on land that was once part of the historic Rancho La Cienega and later the estate of E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin, whose name still lives on in the surrounding Baldwin Hills.

Inspired by the Garden City Movement, consulting architect Clarence Stein joined Reginald D. Johnson, the firm Wilson, Merrill & Alexander, and landscape architect Fred Barlow Jr. to create a neighborhood unlike anything Los Angeles had seen before.

Their vision was simple but revolutionary: design a community around people, not automobiles. At a time when Los Angeles was embracing the automobile, Village Green challenged the belief that neighborhoods should be designed around cars.

A REVOLUTIONARY VISION FOR URBAN LIVING

When Baldwin Hills Village opened in 1942, it challenged nearly every convention of suburban development.

Instead of lining homes along streets, the designers pushed cars to the perimeter in shared garage courts. More than 600 low-rise residences were carefully arranged around expansive lawns, landscaped courtyards, and pedestrian pathways, allowing neighbors to move through the community without crossing a single interior street.

The concept was heavily influenced by the Radburn planning model, a groundbreaking approach to neighborhood design that prioritized walkability, open space, and community long before those ideas became mainstream.

Village Green became a blueprint for a more thoughtful way to build communities.

A Landmark That Continues to Inspire

Originally built as rental housing, the community transitioned to condominiums in the 1970s, adopting the name Village Green.

Today, it is recognized as one of the finest examples of garden apartment planning in the United States. Architects, landscape designers, and urban planners continue to study the community for its innovative approach to residential design.

Its significance has earned Village Green designation as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, placement on the National Register of Historic Places, and National Historic Landmark status in 2001, one of the highest honors awarded to historic places in the United States.
